Koh Samet
Koh Samet is a small but fun golf tee shaped island with some of the nicest beaches around. Kicking back and doing nothing is one of the biggest pastimes here. The Island is a perfect getaway spot for a little romantic vacation. There is a road travelling down the length of the Island.
Koh Samet is serviced by a ferry from Ban Phe, only a short 5 km away on the coast of Rayong Province. The ferry docks at the northern Na Dan Pier. Boat service can also be arranged for the other bays if you are staying further south or on the west coast.
You can rent kayaks and sailboats from some of the beaches. There are an assortment of trips to the nearby Islands of Koh Kudee and Koh Thalu where you can snorkel, swim or explore. The mainland is also a good destination for day tripping, Rayong Town is not far away. The Island has a couple of dive outfits, restaurants, internet shops and bars. The further north, the more stuff.
Beaches: There are plenty of beaches to choose from on Koh Samet with the majority being on the east coast. All of the beaches have incredibly fine white sand. The northern beaches have the most accommodations and they thin out the further south you go. There are a couple of resorts on the north coast but Hat Sai Kaew is the first resort beach you come to and it is the longest and busiest. If you want a little activity and some nightlife then this is where you want to stay. The beaches of Ao Phai are just to the south and have fewer resorts. Just past the halfway mark on the Island you will find Ao Wong Duan, a perfect half moon bay with beaches on all sides and a surprising number of bungalow outfits. On the west coast lies the solitary and beautiful beaches of Ao Prao. The beach is very quiet, peaceful and has great sunsets. There are another 10 smaller and lesser known beaches to stay at.
Khao Laem Ya - Mu Ko Samet National Park: Koh Samet, the nearby small Islands and the headland near the ferry pier on the mainland form this National Park. Koh Thalu is home to a large community of fruit eating bats also called flying foxes. The park headquarters are on the mainland and include a restaurant. Accommodations are available on Koh Samet, nearby Koh Kudee and on the mainland. Phone +66 2562 0760 to reserve.
