Koh Similan

If you are looking for some excellent diving and snorkelling then these Islands are where you want to GO. The Similan Islands are a group of nine islands in the Andaman Sea about 65 km off the coast of Khao Lak and about 100 km northwest of Phuket. The area has been turned into Mu Ko Similan National Park. The Similans are one of the top dive spots in the world due to their spectacular sea life and scenery. The Islands have beautiful white sandy beaches surrounded by dense jungle and huge strikingly serene granite boulders. There is also royal residence on Koh Miang. The Islands are also called by number 1-9. There is a ferry service from Khao Lak which runs from November to May and takes 4 hours.

Mu Ko Similan National Park: All of the islands except one are uninhabited and undeveloped. Koh Miang is the park headquarters and is the only one with limited accommodations but camp sites are available on Koh Similan. There is also a visitor centre and gift shop at the headquarters. There are small and basic restaurants on Ko Miang, Ko Pad, and Ko Tachai which are all open 8-8. The park is only open from mid November to mid May. Accommodations on site. Phone +66 2562 0760 to reserve.

Diving and Snorkelling: There are day trips from Phuket and Khao Lak but to get the most out of your trip a liveaboard is the best way to go. Liveaboards also leave from Phuket and Khao Lak and can be any length of time. This way, you live on the boat and can do the most diving possible. Divers can enjoy the wide variety of sea life living on the many reefs surrounding the islands. Keep your eyes out for whale sharks. The majority of trips are for divers but there are some specifically for snorkellers. Also some of the beaches only allow snorkelling. The weather is best from November to the middle of May. During monsoon season there are still some diving trips but many less and weather permitting.

Hiking: If you need a break from the water, take a hike on Koh Similan or Koh Miang. Lots of interesting flora and fauna for such a small spot. The views are fabulous.
