Nakhon Phanom
Nakhon Phanom is a small town on the Mekong River with wonderful views of the Mekong River and the mountains in Laos. You can get a visa to Laos as you cross the border. There is not a lot to do here and 1 day will suffice unless you really need to relax. Try eating some of the local giant catfish in one of the many restaurants.
You can cross into Laos from here.
Riverside Promenade: Take a walk along the River and stop at one of the many restaurants for some of the local giant catfish. Check out the Indochina Market at the northern end.
Phra That Renu Nakhon: This wat is similar but smaller than Phra That Phanom. It is 40 km south of Nakhon Phanom. Phra That Renu Nakhon has a market where cotton, silk and other well made local products are sold. This Wat is close to Phra That Phanom.
Phra That Phanom: Isaan's most important Wat can be found 50 km south of Nakhon Phanom in the town of That Phanom. The 1500 year old temple has been rebuilt at least 7 times, the last made to look like the That Luang in Vientaine, Laos. The Phra That Phanom festival is a yearly event, usually in February, that runs for 10 days. There is much worshiping as well as lots of entertainment and food. Both Lao's and Thais attend in great numbers.
Market Day: Along the river on Monday and Thursday there is a large market with Thai and Lao merchants. There are the normal market things but also some neat herbal medicines and stuff brought by the Lao merchants.
Nakhon Phanom Jail: This old jail is now used as a park and is a good place to bring a book. I wonder if there is a new jail, or did they just let everyone go? Sometimes in Thailand you just don't know.
Phu Phan National Park: This medium sized park is a nice place for a day trek. There are a few waterfalls and a natural rock bridge. The area was a base for Free Thai operations in WWII. The park is 110 km west of Nakhon Phanom. Take highway 22 for 120 km and look for signs. Accommodations on site. Phone +66 2562 0760 to reserve.
Phu Langka National Park: This park lies north of Nakhon Phanom. Within you will find Namtok Tat Kham, a 4 tiered waterfall. Follow highway 212 along the river for 90 km. No accommodations.
