Trang
The town of Trang lies 100 km southeast of Krabi and is the capital of Trang province . The town is a great place to stay for a few days and explore the area. The whole province is relatively undiscovered by tourists. 30 km to the west lies the beautiful coast on the Andaman Sea. There are plenty of Islands filled with nice white sandy beaches. There is a slew of things to do in the province so book a tour, hire a driver or go it alone.
Khao Pu Khao Ya National Park: This large National Park is situated 65 km northeast of Trang Town in neighbouring Phatthalung province but some of the park is accessible from the back entrance which is only 20 km to the northeast. The park is loaded with caves and waterfalls as well as having 3 nature trails and some hiking paths. Take highway 4123 northwest from Trang Town to the back side. To get to the park headquarters head east from Trang town on 4 for 40 km and 4163 north for 20 km and look for signs. Restaurant and accommodations on site. Phone +66 2562 0760 to reserve.
Mu Koh Phetra National Park: This marine park covers the coastline and more than 30 Islands mostly in the northern part of Satun province but extending north into Trang province. The Islands in the park are all quite small but there are some wonderful nice white sandy beaches. There are also some rocky and mangrove infested ones. A few of the Islands like Koh Do Bulon Don have resorts on them. To get to the park headquarters from Trang Town, take highway 404 south for 55km and switch to 416 south for 55 km and look for signs. The Islands in Trang's waters can be reached by boat from some of the piers in the Palian district at the end of highway 404, only 45 km south of Trang Town. Hat Chao Mai National Park: Covering the Andaman coast and nearby Islands to the west of Trang Town, this marine park has lots to see and do. There are caves and mangroves to explore as well as a number of beaches and reefs. There are even some hot springs about 15 km east of the park headquarters. Hat Pak Meng is a nice beach hemmed in by cliffs located 5 km north of the park headquarters. There are some nice seafood restaurants to sample before taking a ferry to one of the Islands from the local Pier. The park headquarters are located on Hat Chang Lang, another nice beach. From Trang Town take highway 4046 west for 25 km, switch to 4162 south for 10 km to Hat Pak Meng and follow the shore road south for 7 km. Restaurant and accommodations on site. Koh Kradan: This beautiful Island is part of Hat Chao Mai National Park and can be found 20 km southwest from Hat Pak Meng where you can catch the hour long ferry. The Island is mostly coconut and rubber plantations but the beaches are great and the water is crystal clear. There are some resorts on the Island.
Koh Mook: Part of Hat Chao Mai National Park, this high cliffed Island is the home to Morakot Cave. The entrance to this cave allows small boats to pass through. You travel throuth the cave and exit at a pristine white sandy beach surrounded by high cliffs. Ferry service is from the pier at Hat Pak Meng. Resorts are available on the island.
Koh Libong: is the largest island in the area and is part of a wildlife preserve. There are a few fishing villages, a couple of dive and tour outfits, some resorts and a few restaurants. Endangered manatees and nice beaches are everywhere. Ferry service is from the Hat Yao Ban Chao Mai Pier. From Trang Town take highway 4046 west for 25 km, switch to 4162 south for 10 km to Hat Pak Meng and follow the shore road south for 25 km.
Koh Sukorn: The is another nice Island with many lovely beaches and coves. Catch a ferry at Tha Kham Pier. Take highway 404 south for 50 km from Trang Town. in Palian. Resorts are on the Island.
Kayaking: This is a great way to see the Islands, beaches and coves of the region's National Parks. They are available for rent at most beaches and there are many tours you can book.
Trang Municipal Park: Located 1 km east of town on highway 4 is this nice busy park which is the site of the Phraya Rassadanupradit Mahissarapakdi Monument. The monument is dedicated to Phraya Ratsada who helped Trang Town achieve it's prosperity in the late 1800's by developed transportation routes, an education and health system and rubber plantations. The park is used mostly by locals and is a good place to people watch.
Sa Kaphang Surin: On the northeast outskirts of Trang Town on Thanon Wian Kaphang is this park spread across a large pond with a walkway out to 3 pavilions. There are restaurants and gardens here making it a great place to chill and grab a bite.
Thale Song Hong: This large lake is quite mezmerizing with its mountain jutting up from the middle. From Trang Town take highway 4 north for 35 km, just past Laem Khao Kop then take 4236 north for 6 km and look for signs.
Laem Le Khao Kop: Located just off highway 4 before the north turnoff to Thale Song Hong. This large cave system requires renting a small boat and paddling through.
Khao Chong Wildlife and Nature Education Centre: The centre has some waterfalls along the great nature trails wandering through the woods. A small centre with exhibits of the surrounding ecosystem. There are scientists from all over the world coming here to study. Take highway 4 east for 20 km and look for signs. It is a little past the turnoff for Khlong Lamchan Waterfowl Park.
Khlong Lamchan Waterfowl Park: 17 km east of Trang Town is this swampy home to thousands of migratory birds. January to March is the best time to see birds. There are places to camp but you will need to get permission from the Royal Forestry Department. The park is close to Khao Chong Wildlife and Nature Education Centre.
Southern Thailand Botanical Garden: This arboretum can be reached by taking highway 404 south from Trang Town for 15 km. The park was quite a nice place to wander around in. There were a number of gardens, including an herb one. The well cared for nature trails were a nice way walk off some of that second lunch. There is also a plant museum and a library.
Vegetarian Festival: Like in Phuket this festival is a tradition brought to Thailand by immigrating Chinese in the late 1800's and early 1900's. It is held on the full moon night in October. The Chinese Thais eat no meat and dress in white for 9 days to make merit and bring good fortune. There is a large procession every night carrying a medium and blasting firecrackers everywhere. Cake Festival: You have to love a cake festival. In August there are cakes everywhere especially in Trang Town and Ban Lam Phu Ra where cake making tradition is centuries old. The green cakes are the best. And the orange ones.
Trang Roast Pork Festival: Every September the cooks get busy roasting a lot of pork. The pork is wonderfully cooked with a traditional recipe and a festival is never a bad idea.
Ta Phao Shell Festival: This festival promotes conservation. The festival is held in November at Hat Pak Meng.
Markets: Trang Town has some great markets. The day market in the centre of town is a great place to wander and shop. The fruit is fantastic and the spices, wow, what aromas. The Night Market, beside City Hall is a must for some tasty local foods.
Cafes: These are a great place to go for breakfast, lunch or diner. The Chinese influence is wonderful and the coffee is different and good. Order the one with condensed milk and sweetened and of course some dim sum to go with it.
Rubber Plantation: Rubber is one of the biggest industries in the area. Visiting one of these plantations will give you some insight into the local economy and give you some knowledge of rubber harvesting and processing. Just like maple syrup.
Underwater Wedding: Every Valentine's Day there are a number of wedding ceremonies held under the waves off Koh Kradan. There are more and more people every year who want to do this Guinness World Record activity.
